Kayaking on the Doon

On The DoonShe prophesied that late or soon,
Thou wad be found, deep drown’d in Doon,
Or catch’d wi’ warlocks in the mirk,
By Alloway’s auld, haunted kirk

Robert Burns – Tom O’ Shanter

I’m extremely thankful that no one drowned in the Doon today as I got the chance to paddle down the river, past Robert Burns country, and out to the beaches of Ayr. The trip of organised by Monklands Canoe Club, with 7 people attending. I haven’t been in a boat since last summer, so nerves were extremely high. At the beginning everything was a bit shaky, but with help for everyone who was there I slowly started to gain more confidence and enjoy the day. The Doon gave us plenty of obstacles and weirs to enjoy, as well as giving us some fantastic views. A highlight being the famous Brig o Doon mentioned in Robert Burns poem “Tam O’ Shanter”.

I had a fantastic day, it was amazing to get back in a boat and start learning again. I’m looking forward to kayaking a lot more this summer, and hopefully get a chance to properly improve my technique.

Thanks to every one in the club for helping me out today, and to Bill for taking some great pictures.
