I’ve never had a good relationship with bikes. Went over the handle bars a few times as a child and at the age of 12 I swapped the bike for a skateboard. Well it was a snakeboard but I won’t go into it just now. I had little need for a bike. I believe the bike I rarely used as a teenager is still in my folks garage, unloved.

During a trip to the Lake District Lisa and I hired some bikes and completed a 16 mile round trip from Windermere, down to Bo-ness, on the ferry crossing, and then up to Hawkshead. Just on a whim to be honest, the weather was nice and we wanted a convenient way to see the area. It was hard work but it was good, really good. I really enjoyed the challenge, the speed and the freedom of being on a bike. The day didn’t go without it flaws. A few times we had to get off and push but on the whole I think we did ok for complete novices.

Since then I have been keen to go cycling in Scotland. I have always known that Glentress existed as many of my friends and pupils go there although I was never keen to go. Since I am not too confident on a bike I wasn’t keen to do anything too extreme and Glentress seemed a bit mental for me. I’m much more interested in getting distance rather than reaching rapid speeds down a narrow path, dodging tress and hitting jumps. After being (wrongly) informed that Glentress would cater for my distance/chilled routes I changed my tune and decided to go.

So here’s the route we followed. I believe we went on the green route from the cafe, then straight onto the blue. We then fired the bikes in the back of the car, drove up to the second car park and then tried the other green route.

Overall it was good. It was definitely more extreme than I had hoped, but I do feel I got better has the day went on. At the beginning of the day I had visions of doing a green, blue and then a red. After doing a blue I can safely say I am not ready for a red and I am a long way off doing the black. It’s a great facility and I was very impressed at how well kept it was. I’m actually looking forward to going back again and attempt to be a bit more daring on the bike….even though I’m a big fearty!
