Meall Glas

Region: Loch Lomond
Weather: Cloudy, wet underfoot although no rain throughout the day. Cloud cleared later in the afternoon.
Duration: 5 hours (we took our time)
Company: Peter Stewart, Donald Stewart

Went with both the McNeish and the Mountaineering Club book to decide which route to take. We stop off at Callander for some coffee and an opportunity to look over the map. We decided to take the path from the South, from Glen Dochart, (recommended by the Mountaineering club book) as it was a shorter journey.

Our original plan was included Sgiath Chuil in our walk for the day. We quickly realised that we didn’t have enough time to do both. After parking the car and following the path behind the house we followed the stream to the peak on the West. The ground was pretty boggy which slowed the pace down and the path started to disappear. At this point we had to pick our route careful to avoid the snow and the crags.

We were mighty impressed by the amount of snow on the mountain making us regret not bringing our skis and snowboards.

Once at the top we noticed the size of some of the snow cornices hanging off the side. Always gives us an understanding of how dangerous the mountains can be.

After a quick lunch we walked along the ridge along to the trig to spot the route onto Sgiath Chuil. Since we weren’t doing the 2nd hill we left the trig on route to the house, using the forest as a reference point.

It was a good walk with some good views of Creag Mhor. The path wasn’t clear, but it was easy to find our way to the peak. Not the most memorable mountain I have walked, although the company was great and I look forward to being back in the area to tick of the remaining hills in the area.
